ASC staffing for growth and success: 4 Qs with Hyde Park Same Day Surgicenter Administrator Melissa Rice

Chicago-based Hyde Park Same Day Surgicenter and Illinois Anesthesia Specialists Administrator Melissa Rice offers important insight to overcome staffing challenges and build strong ASC teams.

Question: What has been your biggest staffing challenge and how do you overcome it?

Melissa Rice: Our biggest challenge is finding candidates to come to the center. Location is key and for us we are not in an ideal area. We have resorted to using agency nurses.

Q: What is your philosophy on building and maintaining a positive culture at the ASC?

MR: We definitely have a family atmosphere at the center. We spend more time together than with our families so keeping things light and communication open and flowing has helped.

Q: What tips do you have for new administrators managing an ASC team for the first time?

MR: Work side by side with your employees. Physically learn their job and challenges. This will help you better understand the role and needs.

Q: How have you challenged your team to grow in 2019?

MR: Be more hands-on with other roles that can use help at times. Being multi-functional in a small center is key for growth and success. Also keeps the sense of team close to heart.
