Management and development company AmSurg's push to equip its partner centers with femtosecond lasers for cataract surgeries has revealed several important things about the long-term use of the tool, according to a post on the AmSurg Leadership Blog.
Since 2012, AmSurg has been installing lasers in its centers. As of July 2014, there are 17 femtosecond lasers in AmSurg centers, and partners have performed more than 5,000 laser-assisted cataract surgeries, according to the post. The following are preliminary findings from AmSurg's laser cataract surgeries.
1. AmSurg centers with lasers grew at a 3 percent higher rate than nonlaser centers.
2. In laser centers, between 13 percent and 15 percent of patients chose laser cataract surgery.
3. Laser use results in one less cataract surgery for every 3 to 5 lasers done in one day.
4. Multiple physician buy-in is important to laser patient volume. Education is also an important step for successful laser surgery volume.
5. Laser patient flow efficiency is best when the laser is located in a procedure room separate from the OR.
