AMA launches physician survey on Medicare pay cut

The American Medical Association has randomly selected physician practices and individual physicians to complete a patient-care hours survey that will ensure that practice expenses and patient-care hours are accurately reflected, according to a Nov. 7 report from the AMA.

The national survey, which is supported by 173 healthcare organizations, aims to better understand costs faced by physician practices to support physician payment reform.

It will give physicians and practices a chance to communicate accurate financial information to CMS and policymakers as the AMA advocates for payment reform in the face of a 26% physician payment decline from 2001 to 2023.

The survey, conducted by independent research company Mathematica, is collecting the data needed to calculate practice expenses per hour of patient care by physician specialty.

The survey is just one of the ways the AMA is appealing to CMS and policymakers to counter ongoing payment cuts.
