Alpharetta, Ga.-based Surgical Information Systems Chief Nursing Officer Ann Geier, RN, shared five do's and don'ts for ASCs planning to replace retiring administrators, physicians and other key staff.
Her advice was published by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses.
The details to know:
1. Don't be too focused on managers and physicians. Nurses in leadership positions play an important role in the center's operations. To mitigate challenges that could arise if a nurse leaves, ensure other nurses are trained to fill the leader's shoes.
2. Don't delay finding replacements. Identify potential leaders within your ASC who could step up if someone decides to leave.
3. Do focus on mentorship. When you've found potential leaders within your organization, mentor those individuals so they're prepared to step up if necessary.
4. Do plan for the unexpected. Prepare for a key staff member departing suddenly so the situation can be handled smoothly.
5. Do share plans with staff. Let your staff know you're planning ahead. That way, you can identify staff members who are eager to learn new skills.
