Hamilton Eye Institute provides 50 free cataract surgeries in 2 days
Memphis, Tenn.-based Hamilton Eye Institute provided free cataract surgery to about 50 patients at its Cataract-A-Thon June 15 and 16. Hamilton Eye ophthalmologist Brian Fowler, MD, and cataract surgeon Emily Taylor Graves, MD, launched the Cataract-A-Thon two years ago. Dr. Fowler hopes to begin hosting Cataract-A-Thons in other cities in 2020.
Tenet holds campaign for Feeding America
Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare held its 2018 Health Over Hungry Cereal Drive to collect cereals and promote the importance of eating breakfast June 1 through June 8. The annual campaign supports Feeding America. All Tenet facilities participated in the drive and hosted food and donation drives to benefit local nonprofit food banks.
Front Range Center for Brain & Spine Surgery awards $2k in scholarships
Fort Collins, Colo.-based Front Range Center for Brain & Spine Surgery awarded two Fort Collins-based Centennial High School seniors $1,000 each. Lindsey Farber and Rachel Yoder were selected as the 2018 scholarship recipients based on their academic achievements and written essays. Ms. Farber plans to become a nurse at a local hospital
Viewmont Surgery Center awards $2k scholarship
High school student Virginia Tanner is the 2018 recipient of Hickory, N.C.-based Viewmont Surgery Center's annual scholarship. Ms. Tanner is a senior at Hickory High School and plans to study chemistry at UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall.
Dr. Erin Fogel going to Haiti on cataract surgery mission trip
Concord (N.H.) Eye Center ophthalmologist Erin Fogel, MD, is joining SEE International and the Friends of Haiti organization on a cataract surgery mission trip. Dr. Fogel said, "I have been waiting a long time to do something like this. I've never been to Haiti but the desperate need of the people there makes it even more compelling to go and to do what I can to help."
