4 things to know about hospital-ASC partnerships

ASC-hospital collaborations are becoming more common, according to Joe Cantlupe, an athenaInsight contributor.

Four takeaways:

1. Hospitals have ownership interests in 23 percent of all ASCs, with 2 percent of all centers entirely hospital-owned, according to a 2019 MedPAC report.

2. As value-based care gains momentum, more hospital leaders are beginning to view ASCs as partners rather than competitors.

3. ASCs and hospitals are forming strategic partnerships to expand and coordinate service lines, in turn increasing revenue and expanding their patient bases.

4. Spectrum Healthcare Partners operates ASCs in Portland, Maine, and provides orthopedic care at a hospital system through a strategic partnership. "Not every joint replacement is appropriate for an ASC. We've worked hard in relationships with hospitals. We're working with hospitals to provide more seamless care," said Kelly David, Spectrum's director of marketing and public relations.
