Over a fourth of physicians (26%) are considering leaving their primary roles as physicians to pivot to nonclinical careers, according to Medscape's 2023 "Physicians and Nonclinical Careers Report," published Nov. 7.
That's up from 2021's report, which indicated that 22% of physicians were considering leaving the medical field.
About 24% of male physicians are considering leaving medicine, compared with 28% of female physicians. Physicians between the ages of 30 and 39 and physicians over 60 are the most likely to consider a change.
A plurality of physicians (42%) indicated that if they left medicine, they would transfer to a career in education or teaching.
