Neal Maerki, RN, CASC, is the administrator of Bend (Ore.) Surgery Center, a multi-specialty surgery center that opened in 1997. The same year the surgery center opened, Mr. Maerki joined the organization as a nurse. BSC has grown considerably over the years since its inception, moving into a brand new, state-of-the-art facility in 2005. The surgery center offers a wide gamut of surgical services, including orthopedics, endoscopy, general surgery, spine surgery and pain management procedures.
Mr. Maerki has grown alongside BSC through the years, first to nurse manager and then to administrator of the surgery center. He previously worked as a telemetry floor manager and an ICU staff nurse before moving into ambulatory surgery.
As administrator, Mr. Maerki has been instrumental in the surgery center's success, helping the organization recruit healthcare professionals, maintain profitability and mold its reputation in the local community. The surgery center's non-profit arm, the Bend Surgery Center Foundation, recently awarded $29,500 in scholarships to new high school graduates who plan on pursuing a career in the healthcare field.
"Providing resources to assist Central Oregon students in getting the necessary education to have a career in healthcare is an honor," Mr. Maerki said. "Being able to contribute to the future of our local healthcare community has been embraced by the local medical and greater Central Oregon community through donations at our annual fundraiser."
