ASC Industry Leader to Know: Tom Deas, Jr., MD

Tom Deas, Jr., MD, is the chief medical officer for Sandlot, a healthcare information technology company. Dr. Deas has written about the importance of collecting and reporting quality data in ambulatory surgery centers through initiatives like the GI Quality Improvement Consortium, which created a national GI endoscopy data registry of quality measures.

“While many endoscopy centers track performance indicators for internal use, many physicians' practices still operate in a vacuum when it comes to benchmarking against peers. By leveraging the benefits of a national initiative like GIQuIC, they are able to objectively compare their performance measures to other professionals across the country,” said Dr. Deas.

This type of collaboration on quality indicators can drastically improve colon cancer screenings and detection, he said.

Dr. Deas is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from Baylor University, graduating cum laude in 1970, followed by an M.S. in Chemistry from Baylor in 1971. While serving in the United States Air Force, he received his MD from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport, graduating with honors in 1978.

Dr. Deas also holds a Masters in Medical Management from UT Dallas School of Business. He retired as a Colonel in the USAF and is Medical Director of two Fort Worth, Texas, ambulatory endoscopy centers.

Dr. Deas is a Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and American College of Gastroenterology. He served as president of North Texas Specialty Physicians from 2003 until 2007 and has served as a board member for Sandlot, LLC, and North Texas Specialty Physicians. He is also president–elect of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and participates in the Surgical Care Affiliates Physicians Leadership Team.
