Vermont Narrows Down Models for Health Insurance Exchange

State officials have decided that one of three insurance plans currently sold in Vermont will serve as the model for the benefits plan offered to small employers and individuals in 2014, according to a Burlington Free Press report.

The Green Mountain Care Board will select from MVP Health Care, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Vermont and Cigna by early March. The three plans offer benefits in most of the 10 categories of coverage that the federal healthcare reform law defines as "essential benefits." Federal law requires Vermont to set up a virtual health insurance marketplace by 2014 or allow the federal government to step in with its own model.

All insurance plans offered on the exchange will offer essentially identical benefits, with the only differences being how much consumers pay in monthly premiums, deductibles, co-payments and other cost-sharing provisions.
