The most popular payment models among young physicians

Young physicians are participating in fee-for-service models more than other methods of payment, according to a report published by Medscape

The "Young Physician Compensation Report" for 2023 surveyed 10,011 practicing physicians younger than 40 on aspects of their work, including compensation and Medicare participation. 

The margin between young physicians who use fee-for-service models and those who participate in value-based payment models increased from 18 percent in 2022 to 38 percent this year.

Here is a breakdown of the payment models used by young physicians in 2023, listed by popularity of selection:

  1. Fee-for-service (41 percent)
  2. Value-based payment model (16 percent)
  3. Bundled payments (13 percent)
  4. Episode of care payments (12 percent)
  5. Capitation model (5 percent)
  6. Concierge practice (1 percent)
  7. Other (11 percent)
