Texas Legislature Considers Renewal of Medicaid Women's Health Program

The Texas Medicaid Women's Health Program is scheduled to expire this year, and the Texas Legislature has not yet decided whether to renew it, according to a Reporter News report.

The decision would affect many women — mostly the working poor with no access to health insurance — by eliminating access to prenatal care, abortion services and other services covered by the program.

The bill reauthorizing the program includes a provision excluding any agency that "provides or promotes abortions," according to the report. Planned Parenthood, which does not perform abortions, bills the Medicaid program approximately $1 million every year.

According to the report, approximately 40 percent of women receive pregnancy healthcare through Planned Parenthood. If the organization is eliminated from the list of providers, many women may not have access to other options, according to the report.
