Study: California Workers' Compensation Reform Could Lower ASC Payments

California's 2012 workers' compensation regulatory changes could bring decreased payments for ambulatory surgery centers services, according to a Workers Compensation Research Institute study.

The study discovered a slew of possible impacts from the measure, including an increase in primary care and a decrease in specialty service payments, lower medical legal expenses, faster dispute resolution and more timely medical treatment, according to the report.

The study also looked at California benchmarked against other states prior to Senate Bill 863. ASC and hospital outpatient costs were lower in California than most states. Medical care for the state's injured workers decreased by 30 percent from 2002 to 2004, but then increased rapidly between 2005 and 2010.
