Single-Specialty Coders Could Limit Their Prospects in the Future, AAPC President Says

In an interview with BC Advantage magazine, AAPC President and CEO Deborah Grider said coders who focus on one specialty might limit themselves in the industry in the coming years.

According to the AAPC release, Ms. Grider said she encourages coders to further their education, especially considering the current changes to the industry. Aside from the obvious ICD-10 changes scheduled for Oct. 1, 2013, she recommended coders learn about meaningful use, stimulus money for EHR, recovery audit contractors and other topics.

"I learned many years ago with the constant change in health care that is important to evolve and grow. [You] must reach out of your comfort zone and learn a new specialty or skill," she said.
