Michigan Health Insurance Bill Stalled for Now

A health insurance exchange bill passed in the Michigan Senate on Nov. 10 may not move much further for the rest of 2011, according to a Crain's Detroit Business report.

Gov. Rick Snyder called for legislation creating a new statewide health insurance exchange to be passed by Thanksgiving, but leadership in the state House have emphasized the need to take their time with the legislation.

Michigan, like many other states, is also waiting to see the result of the 2012 election, which could decide whether the federal healthcare reform law will be repealed. The U.S. Supreme Court is also set to rule on the constitutionality of the universal mandate portion of the healthcare law, which requires all Americans to have health insurance starting in 2014. A ruling is expected by late June.

Ari Adler, press secretary to Michigan House Speaker Jase Bolger (R-Marshall), said the Speaker believes there is no rush to create a health exchange in Michigan.

The state has received some federal grant money but must pass legislation in order to access more funds.
