A panel of Idaho lawmakers met Wednesday to look at legislation for a state-run health insurance exchange, which would allow individuals and small businesses to "comparison shop" for coverage in an online marketplace, according to an Idaho Statesman report.
The bill, proposed by the Idaho Department of Insurance, would give the insurance industry nearly half the voting seats on the 13-member board. Health insurers and small businesses would each hold three of the 11 voting seats, while insurance salespeople would get two and the legislature would get two.
The bill has been criticized for giving health insurance companies too much power over the exchange. Bill Deal, director of the Idaho Department of Insurance, said members would have a fiduciary duty to the "interests of eligible individuals and eligible employers and … employees."
