House Schedules Hearings on Independent Payment Advisory Board

The House Budget and Energy and Commerce Committees have scheduled hearings on the Independent Payment Advisory Board, created by the health reform law to make recommendations to cut spending in Medicare, according to an ASA release.

IPAB is empowered to make recommendations to cut Medicare spending if the agency's spending growth reaches certain measures. The bulk of spending recommendations is expected to come from payment cuts to Medicare providers.

The House Budget Committee hearing, titled "Medicare's Future: An Examination of the Independent Payment Advisory Board," is scheduled for Tuesday, July 12. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will testify in support of IPAB.

The House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee hearing, titled "IPAB: The Controversial Consequences for Medicare and Seniors," is scheduled for Wednesday, July 13. Secretary Sebelius will also testify at this hearing.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers are also scheduled to testify at the second hearing. The group supports H.R. 452, legislation that would repeal IPAB.
