HHS' Office of the Inspector General released a report in which they recommended focusing audit efforts on physicians who bill more than $3 million each year to catch more fraud and save Medicare millions annually, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.
The number of physicians who billed more than $3 million annually rose about 78 percent from 2008 to 2011, while total Medicare payments to physicians rose 14 percent during the same period.
In 2009, 303 providers billed more than $3 million under Medicare Part B and only 104 were tagged for review by Medicare.
