Healthcare CEO pleads guilty to $300M healthcare fraud scheme, conspiring with physicians

Mashiyat Rashid, the CEO of the West Bloomfield, Mich.-based Tri-County Wellness Group, pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare and wire fraud, as well as one count of money laundering.

Here are the key details to know:

1. The guilty plea comes as part of an investigation into a $300 million healthcare fraud scheme involving the distribution of over 6.6 million dosage units of opioids and unnecessary injections resulting in patient harm.

2. As part of his plea agreement, Mr. Rashid agreed to surrender f $51,396,917.70, as well as property tied to the profits from the scheme, including commercial and residential real estate and a Detroit Piston season ticket membership.

3. Mr. Rashid admitted to conspiring with physicians to require Medicare beneficiaries who wished to obtain controlled substances also get expensive, medically unnecessary and painful injections.
