CMS Contacts Providers for CERT Program Follow-Up

CMS is contacting providers by phone as a follow-up to letters and phone calls sent from Comprehensive Error Rate Testing contractors, according to an AAPC release.

The follow-up is an effort by CMS to calculate a more accurate Medicare fee-for-service error rate and reduce improper payments, according to the release.

CMS staff may ask providers for all necessary medical record documentation for claims they submitted to a Medicare administrative contractor that were reviewed under the CERT program. CMS says these efforts could change claims' status from "improper payment" to "proper payment."
