Bloomfield, Conn.-based Cigna is weighing its options as to whether it will offer coverage on the ACA exchanges in 2018, according to Market Watch.
Here are five things to know:
1. During a call with analysts, David Cordani, Cigna's chief executive, said the company will conduct a full analysis to decide whether it will offer plans next year. Mr. Cordani said the exchanges were "unsustainable."
2. Cigna offers plans in seven state exchanges, with the payer previously saying it anticipated its individual-plan enrollment to grow by 100,000 enrollees in 2017.
3. Despite the projected enrollment increase, Cigna will likely not turn a profit this year, according to MarketWatch. However, the payer expects some improvement financially. MarketWatch reports upcoming financial results will likely dictate whether Cignas pulls out of the exchanges.
4. Cigna is also in the middle on an antitrust trial over its pending deal with Indianapolis-based Anthem. The companies are waiting on a ruling from a federal judge. Mr. Cordani did not weigh in on the antitrust deal during the call. However, Anthem Chief Executive Joseph R. Swedish said Anthem may extend the deal through April 30, 2017, on Feb. 1, 2017.
5. During the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2016, Cigna had earnings reaching $382 million. This figure is down from $426 million during the same period in 2015.
