Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill., has altered its billing practices for patients covered by State of Illinois health insurance, according to a Quincy Journal report.
The hospital now bills state employees for their portion of care charges prior to the state paying its share rather than after. The change came after the state announced it would delay payments for care from six months to 10 months. The hospital delaying bills more than 10 months, especially for flexible spending accounts, could cause patients to lose the allotted money because of federal spending requirements, according to the report.
Hospital trustees rejected requiring employees to file their own claims for reimbursement and wait 10 months for state payment. The state currently owes Blessing $2.5 million in reimbursement for government employees, according to the report.
