Amazon, CVS Health and Optum: How the big 3 took on value-based care in 2023

Amazon, CVS Health and Optum are no strangers to value-based care. Here's how they dug deeper into the model in 2023:

Amazon

In February, retail giant Amazon completed its $3.9 billion acquisition of virtual and in-person primary care company One Medical. Through the deal, Amazon gained access to primary care platform Iora Health, One Medical's value-based care arm now known as One Medical Seniors.

CVS Health

In May, CVS Health completed its $10.6 billion acquisition of primary care company Oak Street Health. The deal gives CVS access to the company's value-based primary care network with more than 160 clinics in 21 states that mostly focus on Medicare beneficiaries.

"Our vision and our strategy is really about building connections in healthcare," Karen Lynch, CEO of CVS Health, said at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit. "We are driving at value-based care versus volume-based care. We're driving at consumer connections and personal engagement by using technology so that people can be connected to their healthcare."

In March, CVS Health completed its $8 billion acquisition of healthcare platform Signify Health, which also supports value-based care programs.

Optum

In February, UnitedHealth Group closed on a multimillion-dollar deal to acquire home health and hospice company LHC Group, which added to Optum's value-based care services. That same month, Optum acquired Middletown, N.Y.-based multispecialty group Crystal Run Healthcare.

"Crystal Run has long recognized that the fee-for-service reimbursement model is broken, and we committed to transition to value-based care focused on the quadruple aim," Hal Teitelbaum, MD, then CEO of Crystal Run Healthcare, said in an email to employees obtained by Mid-Hudson News.

In June, Optum announced plans to merge with home health and hospice provider Amedisys. The deal, which was approved by Amedisys shareholders in September, "unites two organizations dedicated to providing compassionate, value-based comprehensive care to patients and their families," according to a news release from Amedisys.
