Here are five top ICD-10 myths uncovered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid ICD-10-CM/PCS Myths and Facts report.
1. There will be another extension to the implementation deadline. HHS intends to move forward with Oct. 1, 2014 deadline. Providers should be taking steps to complete implementation by that date.
2. Entities not covered by HIPAA, such as workers' compensation, can remain with ICD-9-CM and choose not to implement ICD-10. ICD-9-CM will no longer be maintained after Oct. 1, 2014. CMS encourages non-covered entities to adopt ICD-10 for its increased detail and value.
3. The increased detail of ICD-10 will make it impossible to use. The increased detail is designed to make it easier to find the correct code. The Alphabetic Index and electronic coding tools are available to help find the correct codes.
4. ICD-10 was developed without clinical insight. Several medical societies were involved in the development of the coding systems.
5. No hard copies of ICD-10-CM or ICD-10-PCS code books will be available. Hard copies of the code books are already available and of manageable size.
