4 things to know about the future of ACOs

The Navigant Center for Healthcare Research and Policy Analysis has released the issue brief The Future of Accountable Care Organizations: How to Create Increased Shared Savings with Payers. Here are four things to know about the first roll-out of ACOs and the possible future of accountable care.

The first generation of ACOs focused on the fundamentals of caring for large patient populations. Medicare and private insurers focused on chronic care management. Medicaid focused on primary care. Larger employers focused on chronic care and preventative health.

As ACOs evolve, the scope of focus will broaden to include:

•    Bundled payments for high-cost acute events and post-acute coordination for Medicare.
•    Expanded primary care, such as dental and mental health, and dual eligibles case management for Medicaid.
•    Complex chronic care and bundled payments for private insurers.
•    Bundled payments and narrower networks for larger employers.
