4 Motivations for Updating Electronic Health Records

Of all the motivations healthcare providers have for switching or adopting an electronic health record, four drivers have the greatest impact, according to EHR Intelligence.

1. Meaningful use participation. First-generation EHRs may not have been designed for proper meaningful use attestation. Switching to a certified EHR will fulfill federal requirements and give providers financial incentives to offset some costs.

2. Improved productivity. Slowed workflow and productivity can be a side effect of EHR systems. Search for a system with an integrated care model to help, rather than hinder, staff members.

3. Up-front costs. The emergence of lower-cost systems is making EHRs more readily available to providers originally hesitant to make the substantial investment.

4. Healthcare consolidation. As more healthcare providers and solo practitioners consolidate care, they will also consolidate technology and medical records systems. Consolidation may help providers when it comes time to attest to meaningful use stages 2 and 3.
