The start of 2014 means only nine months remain until ICD-10 takes effect at healthcare practices nationwide, and the key to practices' ICD-10 success will be knowledge, according to a Government Health IT report.
Here are four areas providers should pay close attention to while engaging in the final months of the code set transition.
1. CMS. Rather than watching CMS for a deadline change, practices should focus on the Oct. 1 deadline as set in stone.
2. Clearinghouses. Clearinghouse volumes will be greatly increased; find one that will share information on how to properly file claims to preserve revenue.
3. Tests. Try to complete end-to-end testing or look for lessons to be learned.
4. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. If the PPACA looks like it is failing, then it will be harder for CMS to persuade Washington that ICD-10 is worth adopting.
