Joint Commission Highlights Look-Alike/Sound-Alike Drugs

The Joint Commission requires healthcare facilities to develop and annually review a list of look-alike/sound-alike medications that are stored, dispensed and administered.

Although the Joint Commission no longer maintains a look-alike/sound-alike medication list on its website, other sources, such as The Institute of Safe Medication Practices, provide a lengthy list of medications that look and sound like, including the following:

Drug Name Confused Drug Name
Abelcet Amphotericin B
Accupril Aciphex
Bicitra Polycitra
Capex Kapidex
Cedax Cidex

For a comprehensive list of look-alike/sound-alike drugs, visit the ISMP website (pdf).
