The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has issued a decision memo that proposes to end certification requirements for bariatric surgery centers, according to a Clinical Endocrinology News report.
The memo states that CMS officials have found sufficient evidence that cessation of bariatric surgery certification requirements would not have an effect on Medicare beneficiary surgery outcomes.
Health services researchers, led by John D. Birkmeyer, MD, of the University of Michigan, initially requested the policy change.
The proposal would not make any changes to the number of bariatric procedures that are covered by Medicare.
