Medicare certification: What does it involve?

To be certified by Medicare, an ambulatory surgery center must undergo a rigorous inspection survey as well as ensure the ASC follows numerous regulations after certification, according to an AmSurg Leadership Blog post.

According to the blog, the Medicare inspection survey involves:

•    Surveyors who are healthcare professionals examining countless aspects of the surgery center on behalf CMS.
•    Surveyors focus on the facility itself to ensure that the physical environment is a suitable site for surgical services.
•    Surveyors also focus on the policies and procedures that govern the operation of the center to ensure that the facility and its staff are prepared to meet the needs of potential patients.

Once an ASC has passes a Medicare inspection survey, they are also subject to unannounced follow-up surveys, with potential repercussions including the revocation of certification.
