The Drug Enforcement Agency has released a letter clarifying the requirements of its final rules for the disposal of controlled substances.
The clarified the rule was intended to help providers dispose of controlled substances from their inventories, rather than tracking down prescriptions for disposal from ultimate users — patients to whom prescriptions have already been issued.
The clarification was released in response to concerns from the American Hospital Association and other related organizations that complying with the rule would both difficult and costly.
