The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has issued guidelines on Medicare certification for facilities that change ownership.
The guidelines state:
• Surveys must be unannounced
• CMS suggests new owners to accept automatic assignment of the seller's Medicare agreement
• State survey agencies must prioritize initial surveys with CMS workload priorities
Any owner of a facility participating in Medicare considering selling the facility must inform CMS.
