Accreditation Tip: 'Go to the Gemba'

The phrase "go to the gemba," one often quoted in lean environments, means going to an environment to understand how it works and why it works that way. Improvement does not happen in a vacuum.

When leading improvement, it's necessary to "go to the gemba," or look outside the conference room, as the most valuable information on improvement comes from the people in the place the improvements are set to occur, according to a post on The Joint Commission's Leadership Blog.

The post recommends taking a gemba walk to "confirm what is actually happening as it is happening," as an invaluable way to gather vital information for performance improvement.

During the gemba walk process, the post suggests asking the questions "what," "why," "what if," and "why not," as they apply to the improvement issue at hand.
