The top reasons anesthesia practices fail

Managing an anesthesia practice in the current healthcare landscape is an ever-changing challenge, according to an Oct. 11 blog post from Rita Astani, president of anesthesia for Coronis Health.

Anesthesia providers in particular are faced with the challenge of generating enough revenue to recruit providers in a competitive market while juggling service requirements and clinical activity.

Financial challenges are the top reason for anesthesia practice failure. Amid expanding coverage requirements and eroding payer mix, practices are now needing to ask for financial support and subsidies from hospitals and ASCs. This added layer has created complicated and contentious contract negotiations, according to the post.

Other factors that lead to practice failures include administrator burnout and other administrative and management challenges.

In the current healthcare environment, a confident, positive relationship between the anesthesia provider and facility administration is key. This relationship is built on customer service, the post said.
