According to an ongoing study, preprocedure ultrasound scans significantly increase the chances of successful dural puncture, according to an Anesthesiology News report.
The researchers, K. Jinn Cin, MMed, and colleagues at Toronto Western Hospital, reported that dural puncture was achieved with a single needle insertion in 59 percent of ultrasound patients, compared with 46 of patients treated with the traditional, landmark-guided method.
The investigators also reported that ultrasound patients required a median of just four needle redirections, compared with nine in the landmark group, according to the report.
