Northwell anesthesiologist accused of drugging, abusing woman

An anesthesiologist affiliated with Northwell Health has been arrested for allegedly giving a woman anesthesia without her knowledge and sexually abusing her on multiple occasions, the Rockland Journal News reported Jan. 3.

Paul Giacopelli, MD, works at Northwell Health in Westchester and Long Island, both in New York, with privileges at Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel Hamlet, N.Y.

Dr. Giacopelli is being accused of four counts each of first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree assault.

"Northwell Health strives to provide the highest level of care to its patients, patients’ families and communities and we take these allegations very seriously," a Northwell spokesperson said in a statement shared with Becker's. "Upon learning of Dr. Giacopelli’s arrest, he was immediately relieved of all patient care duties pending further investigation. We will cooperate with the appropriate authorities as they conduct their investigation."
