Maryland anesthesiologist has license revoked after 7 patients allege sexual assault — 5 things to know

Former Md.-based anesthesiologist and pain management specialist Bryan S. Williams had his license permanently revoked by the Maryland State Board of Physicians after sexual assault allegations from seven patients, Cleveland.com reports.

Here are five things you need to know:

1. Mr. Williams was accused by at least seven women of inappropriate sexual conduct during examinations starting in 2013, when he was working at Kaiser Permanente in Largo and Kensington, Md.

2. Mr. Williams denied the allegations during a hearing before the state medical board. The board concluded that he sexually violated four of the patients through anal and vaginal penetration as well as fondling.

3. His license to practice in Virginia and the District of Columbia has been suspended. His license to practice in Maryland was revoked after almost two years of hearings.

4. He has been named in multiple malpractice suits along with his former employer Kaiser Permanente; the suits allege sexual assault and that Kaiser allowed Mr. Williams to continue practicing even after being made aware of the first allegation. He was fired from Kaiser in October 2014.

Kaiser said in an emailed statement that "the safety of our patients is our highest priority, and we have no tolerance for behavior that puts our patients at risk." The health system said it has reached out to each patient who made allegations against Mr. Williams "and sought to address their concerns."

5. Mr. Williams' estranged identical twin, Ohio-based colorectal surgeon Ryan Williams, MD, was also accused of sexual assault according to an investigation by USA Today. Neither man has been charged with a crime.
