Initial Guidelines Released For Face, Hand Transplant Anesthesia

Initial guidelines have been released for anesthetic management of patients undergoing complex composite transplants, such as hand and face, according to an article in the September issues of the International Anesthesia Research Society's Anesthesia & Analgesia.

The University of Pittsburgh hand transplant group shares its guidelines for anesthesia in the "Pittsburgh Upper Extremity Transplant Anesthesia Protocol," and gives guidelines based on eight hand, forearm or arm transplants in five patients.

The guidelines pertain to fluid management, intraoperative monitoring and anesthesia, including regional strategies to block nerves supplying the shoulder, arm and hand.
