Gerhardt Konig, MD, an anesthesiologist with practice privileges at Maui Memorial Medical Center, is being charged with second-degree attempted murder after police said he tried to kill his wife along a hiking trail in Honolulu, according to a March 27 report from the Honolulu Star Advertiser.
Honolulu police were called to a state park on March 24 after receiving reports that Dr. Konig attempted to push his wife off of the trail during a hike and struck her head multiple times with a rock.
His wife was taken to a Honolulu hospital and remains in critical condition, according to the report. Dr. Konig is in custody with a $5 million bail.
Dr. Konig works for an anesthesia provider contracted with Maui Memorial. Previously, he served as an assistant professor and clinical instructor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a staff anesthesiologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
“Dr. Konig’s medical staff privileges at Maui Memorial Medical Center have been suspended pending investigation,” the health system told the Star Advertiser. “Maui Health takes these concerns and the safety of its patients very seriously and will cooperate with authorities as appropriate.”
