Frank Bures, MD, a dermatologist based in Winona, Minn., says Benadryl can be used as an anesthetic for small surgical procedures, according to a Winona Daily News report.
Dr. Bures said Benadryl can be used for patients who believe they are allergic to lidocaine. Some patients experience an adverse reaction to the injection or epinephrine, or may experience a "fright reaction" that causes the heart to slow.
He said in these cases, Benadryl is an effective option and comes in an injectable form as well as a pill and liquid. He said the drug can be diluted from its stock 5 percent to 1 percent very easily and substituted very efficiently for a small surgical procedure.
