Best Anesthesia Unclear For Total Hip Arthroplasty

Researchers could not identify the best anesthesia to prevent pulmonary thromboembolism in total hip arthroplasty, according to a study published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Monti Khatod, MD, and colleagues gathered data from a nationwide health maintenance organization total registry of 17,595 patients between 2001 and 2008. They examined data from patient charts in the registry and then examined the associations between anesthesia and prophylactic agents and pulmonary embolism.

The patients were administered either mechanical prophylaxis alone, chemical prophylaxis, Coumadin or low-molecular weight heparin with or without mechanical prophylaxis.

The study found no significant difference between the anesthetics and prophylactic agents in their correlation with pulmonary embolism, according to the report.
