In this month's issue of Anesthesiology, several medical professionals, including Donald Berwick, MD, from the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services, discussed the advantages of clinical registries and strategies for implementing such systems.
Clinical registries allow physicians to improve their care. For instance, the Anesthesia Quality Institute is essentially a registry to track clinical outcomes and allow anesthesiologists to compare practices.
Registries allow researchers to do large populations studies by having access to data registries, new devices can be monitored for complications recorded and new guidelines can be developed for clinical decision support.
The authors are encouraging CMS to pursue registry standardization and clarify privacy regulations to encourage participation in registries.
