Anesthesiologist Dr. Carmen Green Named University of Michigan Health System Associate VP for Health Equity

The University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor announced Carmen Green, MD, has been named the first associate vice president for health equity.

She has also been named associate dean for health equity and inclusion. Dr. Green is an anesthesiologist and pain medicine physician at U of M. The Board of Regents appointed her after a national search.

The position was created to address healthcare gender and racial equality issues at the university. Through her research, Dr. Green has found unequal treatment of pain and pain care based on race, ethnicity and gender, according to the release. She has also found that blacks, women and low-income individuals have particularly large barriers to pain medication access.

Dr. Green is also the director of the Healthier Black Elders Center for the Michigan Center for Urban African American Aging Research.
