3 Considerations for Anesthesiologists on Whether to Participate in a HIE Plan

Anesthesiologists and other physicians must soon decide whether or not to participate in the health insurance exchange health plans that are seeking to sign them up, since coverage under the health insurance plans will begin as early as Jan. 1, 2014, according to an emailed report from Anesthesia Business Consultants.

Before looking into making the decision to participate, providers should make sure that the practice remains in charge of the decision. Many insurance companies have sent out "Dear Provider" letters asking physicians to participate in their health insurance exchange plans. According to the release, anesthesiologists and other providers should read correspondence and attachments from their own health plans very closely and take the indicated action.

If something is unclear, contact the plan representative for an explanation. Take note of the key elements regarding the health plan:

1. The insurance products being offered.
2. The adequacy of payment rates.
3. The number of patients.
4. Other contract terms.
