The Vanderbilt Eye Institute at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville will be one of 12 practices in the country to offer a bionic eye as a retinitis pigmentosa treatment, according to a report in the Elk Valley Times.
The FDA-approved Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System will treat functionally blind patients with late-stage RP. The system includes eyeglasses, a camera, transmitter and video processor, as well as an implanted artificial retina.
The institute expects to start using the technology before the end of the year.
