Smith Medical Clinic in Georgetown County, S.C., has opened a vision center to provide free eye care to more than 17,000 area residents without insurance, according to a Carolina Live report. The clinic is financially supported by private donors. The goal is to treat 25 patients twice a month. One physician, two nurses and a receptionist volunteer during each clinic opening. In its first week of service, the clinic's physicians treated 14 patients.
Smith Medical Clinic has provided low cost ophthalmic services for 28 years.
