CMS explains how ICD-10 will change clinical documentation.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has released information on how ICD-10 will affect clinical documentation. ICD-10 codes are more detailed in describing initial encounter, subsequent encounter, acute or chronic, left or right and normal healing, delayed healing and nonunion or malunion.

Joint Commission revises surgical implant surveillance requirements.
The Joint Commission has announced that it has revised a surgical implant surveillance requirement to correspond with requirements changed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The revised element of performance five of the National Patient Safety Goal on surgical site infection prevention now requires providers to measure SSIs for only the first 30 to 90 days following procedures involving an implant, rather than the previous requirement of one year.

Healthcare exchange launch behind schedule.
The Government Accountability Office has found that CMS is behind schedule for some of the 34 federally facilitated exchanges it is expected to open for business by October 1. Similar delays were found in states that will host their own small business exchanges.

AMA names Dr. Ardis Dee Hoven president.
The American Medical Association has named Ardis Dee Hoven, MD, its 168th president. Dr. Hoven, board-certified in internal medicine and specializing in infectious disease, practices at Bluegrass Care Clinic at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington.

Joint Commission revises certification decision outcomes.
The Joint Commission has announced that effective immediately all of its certification program decisions have only two possible outcomes: certified or not certified. Prior to this announcement, Joint Commission decisions included certification, certification with follow-up review, contingent certification, preliminary denial of certification and denial of certification.

Regent Surgical Health contributes to Haiti hospital opening.
Ambulatory surgery center management and development company Regent Surgical Health has contributed funds and equipment to help Partners in Health open the Hospital Universitaire de Mirebalais in Haiti.

Griffin-American Healthcare REIT II acquires Des Plaines Surgical Center.
Griffin-American Healthcare REIT II, co-sponsored by American Healthcare Investors and Griffin Capital Corporation, has purchased 21 medical-related buildings for $141.3 million dollars, including the Des Plaines (Ill.) Surgical Center.
