Alternative Payment: 20 Surgery Centers With Cash Pay Programs

Boulder (Colo.) Community Musculoskeletal Surgery Center.
The surgery center was founded in 2005 and is accredited by The Joint Commission. It includes a staff of more than 20 physicians who are focused on the treatment of injuries or degeneration of the musculoskeletal system. The medical team includes sports medicine, hand and foot and ankle specialists as well as physiatrists. Self-pay patients are expected to pay in full prior to scheduled services and receive a prompt-payment discount consistent with the hospital's managed care contracts. These patients can connect with the center's business office for price estimates. The center is a Pinnacle III facility.

Cedar Orthopaedic Surgery Center (Cedar City, Utah). Cedar Orthopaedic Surgery Center, owned and operated by Randy Delcore, MD, has two operating rooms. The center performs various orthopedic procedures including ACL reconstruction, knee arthroscopy, carpal tunnel release, shoulder surgery, spinal laminotomy and microdiscectomy and more. The center has a zero percent infection rate. The center's cash pay program has been in place for years and cash pay agreements have been done for nearly every type of surgery the center offers. "We have done cash pay total knee replacements for numerous patients, which saved those individuals thousands of dollars in comparison to local hospital costs," says administrator Daron Pealock, RN, BSN. "We arrange home health, pain management and physical therapy for them, which are included in the price."

Central Illinois Endoscopy Center (Peoria)
. Established in 2009, the endoscopy center offers a variety of services, such as colonoscopy, upper endoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy. Cash-pay options are available for patients without insurance, or others who prefer to pay directly. The center has been recognized by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy as part of its program specifically dedicated to promoting quality in endoscopy. The center's physicians are all a part of the Illinois Gastroenterology Institute.

Dearborn (Mich.) Surgery Center. Dearborn Surgery Center currently offers a cash pay model for cosmetic surgery. The center has also recently completed a full cash pay model to market. This program will launch via the center's website by the end of the month. "This allows us to remain competitive with current changes in healthcare reform and healthcare coverage. Many patients prefer to opt for paying out-of-pocket due to deductibles or co-pays," says Ricardo D. Borrego, MD, MSBA. The multispecialty center is a joint venture between physicians and Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn.   
 
Medical District Surgery Center (Las Vegas). The surgery center opened in March 2005. It is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and affiliated with Valley Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas. It is staffed by around 40 surgeons specializing in spine surgery, eye surgery, ENT, general surgery, podiatry, pain management and orthopedics. Kevin Peterson, MD, a general surgeon who performs procedures at the center, offers cash-pay surgeries to uninsured patients, according to a January 2011 report by the Las Vegas Sun.

Memorial Endoscopy Center (Houston). The 8,000-square-foot freestanding facility is licensed by the State of Texas and is certified by Medicare. Patients paying with cash or credit card must make arrangements in advance and payments are due at the time of service. The eight physicians practicing at the center perform a number of diagnostic procedures, such as colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and biopsy. The center also includes almost 20 nurses and support personnel.  

Microsurgical Spine Center (Puyallup, Wash.). Microsurgical Spine Center was founded by board-certified neurosurgeon Richard Wohns, MD, JD, MBA. The outpatient surgery center is affiliated with Symbion. Dr. Wohns serves as Symbion's chief consultant for outpatient spine surgery center development.

Northern California Surgery Center (Turlock). Northern California Surgery Center is an 8,400-square-foot, multispecialty facility managed by Nueterra Healthcare. The center has two operating rooms and one procedure room. Physicians perform gastroenterology, general surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedic and podiatry procedures at the center. Brad Harmon currently serves as the administrator.

Northwoods Surgery Center (Woodruff, Wis.). The freestanding ambulatory surgery center is managed by Pinnacle III. Opened in 2008, the center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. The center includes pre-and postoperative rooms, a centrally located nurse station and operating rooms. Its nine physicians provide orthopedic, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, pain management and ear, nose and throat services.

Orland Park (Ill.) Surgical Center. The surgical center is one of the locations of Pain Specialists of Greater Chicago. It is managed by Pinnacle III, and procedures are performed by three physicians who focus on anesthesiology and pain management. According to an Orland Park Patch listing, the center also offers physical therapy, pediatric and urologic services.

Orthopedic Surgery Center of Orange County (Newport Beach, Calif.). The surgery center is a subsidiary of Hoag Orthopedic Institute. Established in 1999, the center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. It offers a number of surgical services, including foot and ankle procedures, hand and upper extremity procedures and sports medicine procedures. The center is transparent regarding its pricing and lists its procedure prices on its website.

Outpatient Surgery Center of La Jolla (Calif.). The surgery center offers care in a number of specialties, such as orthopedic surgery, spine surgery, pain management, joint replacement surgery, general surgery, otolaryngology and ophthalmology. It has a global fee approach to pricing that establishes one price for each procedure code. The center adheres to that price regardless of minor variations in supplies or time units patients use. The center works with cash patients on a variety of payment plans. The center is a member of the California Ambulatory Surgery Association and is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. It is staffed by more than 40 physicians.

Peak One Surgery Center (Frisco, Colo.). The surgery center is a Pinnacle III facility and is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. It offers services in a wide array of specialties, such as orthopedic surgery, urology, gynecology, pain management and gastroenterology. Its medical staff comprises 22 physicians. Self-pay patients at the center are asked to pay upfront.

Pine Ridge Surgery Center (Wausau, Wis.). The freestanding surgery center is a Pinnacle III facility and is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. Its 15 specialty physicians offer care in cardiology, general surgery and urology. The center includes pre-and postoperative areas.

Regency Healthcare (New York). Regency Healthcare's surgical facility is owned and operated by Robert Haar, MD. Dr. Haar earned his medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. He focuses on arthroscopic surgery of the knee, shoulder, elbow and ankle as well as partial knee replacement and ACL, MCL and PCL reconstruction. The facility has a transparent pricing model and the entire cost of each type of procedure offered by the center can be found on its website.

Skyline Endoscopy Center (Loveland, Colo.). Skyline Endoscopy Center opened in December 2004 and specializes in GI endoscopy procedures. The center performs primarily colonoscopies and upper endoscopies. The four physicians at the center are board-certified gastroenterologists and perform an average of 360 cases per month. Skyline Endoscopy Center is managed by Pinnacle III.

Southwest Orthopedic Surgery Center (Fort Worth, Texas). Southwest Orthopedic Surgery Center's cash pay program bundles the facility fee, anesthesia fee and surgeon fee into one. Implants involved in any procedure are not included, but charged to patients at cost. The surgery center's website includes cash pricing for several procedures. The center, which opened in 1999, is physician-owned.

Space Coast Endoscopy Center (Rockledge, Fla.). The facility focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases and disorders. It offers flexible sigmoidoscopy, upper endoscopy and colonoscopy services. The center is staffed by six physicians. It has also been recognized by The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. The center includes "bundled billing" cash payment options for patients who don't have insurance. The center also accepts check and major credit cards and can work with the patient on creating a payment plan if necessary.

Surgery Center of Oklahoma (Oklahoma City). The 32,535-square-foot multispecialty facility is owned and operated by approximately 40 surgeons and anesthesiologists. The center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. It offers services in a number of specialties, including anesthesiology, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, orthopedics and urology. The center also lists its procedure prices on its website, and attracts cash-pay patients from around the country and Canada.  

The Surgery Center at Lutheran (Wheat Ridge, Colo.). The 15,000-square-foot surgery center was opened in 2006, and it includes four operating rooms and one procedure room. It offers patients care in a wide array of specialties, including orthopedics, gynecology, pain management and podiatry. The center is managed by Pinnacle III, and it is accredited by Medicare and the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.
