Stephen Farkas, MD, left the practice he founded on his own terms after 35 years, the Gainesville Times reports.
Here's what you should know:
1. Dr. Farkas came to Gainesville, Ga. in 1982 to begin his career. He founded Gainesville Eye Associates and for 35 years ran and grew the practice.
2. What started as two employees and one location has expanded rapidly to three locations featuring four physicians, two optometrists and 54 employees.
3. Dr. Farkas said to the Gainesville Times that it was time to retire. He wanted to leave the practice on his own terms. He plans to take some time off and then look for either part-time or volunteer work.
4. The practice had a party for Dr. Farkas attended by his employees and now former patients. One such person, Carlyle Cox, was his patient for 30 years, but also his golfing buddy.
Dr. Farkas performed cataract surgery on Mr. Cox in the 1990s. The pair met up at the golf course sometime later to which Dr. Farkas jokingly said, "Now, watch where my ball goes. I can't see as good as you can."
