Researchers at the Mayo Clinic discovered patients suffering from pain caused by irritable bowel syndrome could benefit from taking pregabalin, Science Daily reports.
Here's what you need to know.
1. The research team led by Yuri Saito Loftus, MD, presented its research at the annual meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology.
2. They theorized that pregabalin could help reduce abdominal pain in patients suffering from IBS.
3. The researchers followed 85 patients with IBS and high abdominal pain. The researchers treated patients with either a placebo or the pregabalin in a 12-week trial.
Patients who received the pregabalin reported "significant improvements" in their pain, and they also showed improvement with other symptoms including bloating and diarrhea.
4, Dr. Saito Loftus did caution the research was conducted on a small scale, and therefore the "results are not definitive, and that more research was needed."
